Classes at Ryco in 2018

I am teaching these classes at Ryco in Lincoln, RI ( in 2018. You can sign up for these classes by contacting me through or by going to Ryco.

PhD Class

PhD stands for Projects Half Done. This is where you can bring in a project from one of my classes that you need more time or help with and I will be able to work with you. The fee for this class is $10. If you missed a session that you have paid for, this is a way to make up the class, and there is no additional fee. Just let me know what you are planning to work on so I am prepared and to insure there is a place for you. You can contact me at

Saturdays, February 24, March 24, April 21 and May 19 2018 from 1:30 to 4:30

You are welcome to come to any or all of these classes.

Bargello Quilt - Glacier Bay

I chose this because I liked the interrupted bargello pattern, and I have been to Glacier Bay, Alaska. This pattern is in the book More Twist - and - Turn Bargello Quilts by Eileen Wright. I made the sample with 2" wide strips rather than 1 1/2" and increased the width of the rows in the chart on page 42 by 1/2" each. So the sample quilt with two borders finished at 62" X 67". I increased the size of the quilt to make it easier to work with the pieces. You will not be using pins while sewing the bargello except to label strip sets and rows.

There is a waiting list for Fall of 2018.

Birch Trees Quilt

This project of birch trees in the fall is offered in two sizes: 25" X 27" or 45" X 49". Please let me know which size you will be doing so you get the appropriate supply list. The background color blocks are sewn on a foundation called Create a Pattern and then trimmed to size.

Before the first class you will need to cut the foundation pieces and label them. This information will be with the supply list so you get to go with the size of the quilt you choose. You may want to come to Ryco on September 9th at 1:30 or at one of the PhD classes to get help with this.

There is a waiting list for Fall of 2018.

Labyrinth Walk

We will be following the pattern Labyrinth Walk by Christopher Florence (The Guilty Quilter). This 84" X 84" quilt looks like a three dimensional maze and is made with just four fabrics that range from dark to light. If you have a receipt from Ryco for the four fabrics, you will get $10 off the price of the class.

Chain Reaction Quilt

This quilt is a varation of Twists and Turns, a pattern in the winter 2016 "qulity" magazine. The pattern makes me think of the links in a chain link fence. You can make the quilt with just four colors for the links (The picture of this quilt will be added soon.) on a white or print background (64" X80") or you can use up to 26 different fabrics - think "stash" - for links on a neutral background (64" X 64").

Sundays, March 10, 17 & 24, 2018 from 9:30 to 12:30 - FULL

Quilter's Tote and Ironing Pad

Simplify carrying your 18" X 24" cutting mat and large rulers. This tote has a quilted diagonal stripe design on one side and an ironing pad on the other.

Saturdays, April 21 and 28 from 9:30 to 12:30

Conerstone Quilt for Beginners

This quilt is designed for beginners who want to learn all the basic steps needed to make a quilt. It measures approximately 60" X 60" and features a fabric that you really like in the larger squares.

Saturdays, April 7 and 14 from 1:30 to 4:30

Pixie Sticks

This 62" X 62" quilt is a varation on a Rail Fence block. The pattern appeared in the July/August 2016 issue of Quilting Quickly with the name Belle Prairie. The blocks are set on point with cornerstones in the sashing. Because this quilt is made with thirty eight 2 1/2" WOF strips, you may choose to use a jelly roll. If you purchase the jelly roll at Ryco, you will get $5 off the price of the class. You will need to divide the 2 1/2" wide strips into two color groups of 19 each. I used 19 cool and 10 warm colored fabrics from my stash. It is OK to cut two or three strips from the same fabric.

Saturdays, February 3, 10 & 17, 2018 from 1:30 to 4:30

Bargello Pinwheel Block Quilt

We will be using the Bargello Pinwheel pattern by Diane McGregor. Because this 62" X 62" quilt is made of sixteen blocks, the bargello work is easier to handle. There are two color groups each made with 10 fat quarters (18" X 21") or their equivalent.

Saturdays, March 3, 10 & 17, 2018 from 1:30 to 4:30

Dream Weaver Quilt

The 12" blocks in this quilt create a simple woven pattern. You can choose to make the size of the sample which is 54" X 65" or follow the amounts in the parenthesis in the instructions to make a 66" X 77" quilt.

Saturdays, April 7 and 14, 2018 from 9:30 to 12:30 - FULL

There is a waiting list for Fall 2018.

The Hexagon Card Trick

This table topper is approximately 42" wide and is made with a 60 degree ruler and a border print fabric. You could also use this as a center medallion in a quilt. Another option is to make strip sets to feature a favorite fabric instead of buying a border print fabric.

Sundays, May 20 and June 3, 2018 from 12:30 to 3:30

Daffodils in Vases - Wall Hanging

Make your own collection of daffodils in vases on a shelf to enjoy all year long. The daffodils are three dimensional with beads in the centers. There are seven flowers and five vases. This finishes at approximately 20" X 25 1/2".

Sundays, March 4, 11 and 18, 2018 from 12:30 to 3:30 - FULL

Earth and Sky

This 65" X 65" quilt has three types of blocks. The center has split curves, the outer panels are half square triangles, and the corners are four patches. By combing these, unexpected designs occur.

Saturdays, April 28, May 5 & 12, 2018 from 1:30 to 4:30 - FULL

There is a waiting list for Fall 2018.

Four Square Float Quilt

The four square blocks appear to be casting a shadow while floating on a white background. Since this "61" X 74" quilt requires 80 five inch squares, charm packs are great to use. The pattern by Sarah Zimmerman was featured in the Aug/Sept 2017 issue of McCalls Quick Quilts. You can quilt this in one piece or quilt it as two panels and then join them.

Saturdays, May 12 & 19, 2018 from 9:30 to 12:30

Mystery Quilt #4

This 60" square quilt is an original design by Judy Lancaster. It is an all day class from 9:30 to 4:30. In class you will start off with a slip of paper that tells you the first step. When you have finished doing that, you will get the next step, and so on. This allows you to move at your own pace. By the end of class you will have finished the quilt top or understand how to complete it.

You can participate in our pot luck lunch - just bring whatever you want to share and bring your own drink.

You will have directions on purchasing your fabric and how to pre-cut it so you are ready to sew right away. This information is available at the checkout counter when you sign up or by contacting me (Judy) at

To the left are sample fabric cards to help you choose your fabric.

These are meant as a guide; you should choose your own combination of fabrics to make your quilt unique.

This class is offered three times in June:

Saturday, June 9, 2018 from 9:30 to 4:30
